If you think the world is a boring place, it's because you don't know Pepe Leal. His handling of colour, his ability to combine textures and his mastery of spatial composition have made him one of the visible heads of interior design in our country.
Pepe Leal acknowledges that he has always had an outgoing and optimistic personality, a trait that is reflected in his interior designs, where the most media-friendly decorator on our list radiates freshness and elegance. In an interview with the prestigious AD magazine, on receiving the interior designer of the year award, our protagonist confessed his weakness for vibrant and bold tones and, although he admitted that he sometimes struggles not to overdo it, we love colour as much as he does.
In his eclectic but coherent style, Pepe Leal enjoys combining 17th and 18th century elements from English, French and Spanish cultures, as well as pieces and motifs from rationalist architecture, to which he adds touches of kitsch. His experience in London, where he began to explore aesthetics, influenced his career, but it was on his return to Spain that he really immersed himself in the world of interior design. A universe that fascinates him and in which contemporary art is his main source of inspiration, as we see in his treatment of textures and spatial composition in his work as an interior designer.
In his studio, showroom and antique shop in Madrid's Salamanca district, Pepe Leal conceives projects for clients from all over the world, always using colour as a primary source of inspiration. As we have seen, his passion for colour is inexhaustible: "I can't imagine my life without colour. It is my weakness. I like them all except those that lack harmony and balance. Colour must envelop you in a pleasant way, it must seduce you", she confessed to AD magazine. A philosophy that we were able to see first-hand in his interior design for our project La Finca by Kronos Homes, a spectacular residential development designed by Rafael de La-Hoz in the heart of the Sotogrande reserve.
One of the highlights of his work is his ability to incorporate small, humorous details and out-of-context elements, while paying meticulous attention to harmony and detail. This approach draws on a variety of strong and diverse influences, including Tony Duquette, whose unabashed eccentricity he enjoys; David Collins, whose savoir faire he loves; Tadao Ando, whom he admires for his mastery of proportion; and Cecil Beaton, for his versatility and artistry.
